The last few days I have been corresponding with Andrea Dettling from Gaertringen, Germany about the connections between Detling and Dettling families. My second great-grandfather, born in Dettensee, Germany in 1805, is most likely related to many family members who live in Germany. Most likely, Dettlings who emigrated to the United States from Russia in the early 1800s are also related, though the exact connections in Germany are not documented as far as I know. Also to be linked are Dettlings who came from Dettingen/Dettlingen/Dettensee in Germany and settled just a few miles across the border in France. Their descendents who emigrated to the United States ended up settling in Ohio. Therefore it is most likely that all Detlings or Dettlings in the US originally came from the same area in Germany. Our surname is not common. Here are a few links:

I have finally finished editing the latest information on the descendants of John Williams, one of the children of Samuel and Sobriety Bunker Williams. That leaves only one of their children–Elizabeth Williams–left to update before I can produce a new CD on the Descendants of Sobriety Bunker. At the current rate, I hope to complete this CD this summer. It will extend the information contained in the Devon Bunkers CD published for the Bunker Family Association. My thanks to Randy Schroder, whose wife Alice is a Williams descendant for obtaining Census information on many of the individuals.

Today [Sunday, February 22] I went out to take a panorama of Lower Table Rock north of the Rogue River a few miles north of Medford. Utilizing a point and shoot digital camera, and a new Gigapan motorized panorama mounted on a video tripod, I took 48 images of this geographic feature. Downloaded to my PC, the images were stitched together by automated software, and then I corrected contrast and cropped the panorama in Photoshop CS3, and saved to a JPG file. I probably should have saved to a TIF but didn’t think about it because I was so excited over my first successful pan shot.
The resulting image was then uploaded to the gigapan.org sharing site. It may be viewed here. I suggest you follow the link to locate the image in Google Earth; or just download the KML file here.

I recently decided to expand my use of social networking sites for both professional and personal reasons. I have been a member of both Facebook and LinkedIn for some time, but hadn’t really used them. Younger folks use these social networking sites in a much different way than those of us who have been schooled in personal correspondence, e-mail, etc. So, I’m going to use LinkedIn for professional activities (more work-related) and Facebook for family history and activity interests (though I’m sure there will be professional contacts there as well. I don’t use YouTube or MySpace.
If you want to join, here are my profile addresses:

Noted genealogist Dick Eastman, who edits Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter, recently published a note on a new book to help genealogists use modern search engines–not just Google–to perform family history research. Based Dick’s review, I purchased a copy that arrived yesterday, and I’m half-way through it already. Google Your Family Tree (FamilyLink.com, Inc., paper, $34.95) is an excellent way to harness technology in family history research. Author Daniel Lynch is not only a genealogist, he’s a practicing Internet entrepreneur. If I had to write a one-sentence review of this 350-page paperback, I’d simply said “It’s about results.”
Lynch shows readers how to use basic and advanced search features to focus their searches and filter results. But that’s not all, he shows you how to use Google Images and Google Video to find visual images to illustrate family histories, how to use Google Maps and Google Earth to explore family history locations current and pasts, and how to use Google Books and Google News Archives to conduct research. Google Language Tools will help translate foreign content. The book contains visual aids to show you how to use these tools, not just describe them. There are even descriptions of top free genealogy sites and how to use them, as well as a basic guide to starting a family history.
Lynch describes other search engines, and notes which ones are likely to be most helpful to family history researchers as well. In my opinion, if you want to seriously improve your research using the internet, this would be an excellent addition to your library.

Medford has four seasons–none of them extreme. Early Saturday morning (December 13, 2008) we had the beginnings of what was supposed to be our first winter storm, with several inches of snow forecast for the valley floor. We had none of that, though there was enough snow to dusts the hills around the valley. This is a photo of Roxy Ann Peak–the view we have from our front door. More snow started falling about 7 a.m. this morning, so it looks like today will be cold and driving conditions a little dicey.

Yesterday [November 26] I was informed by my web hosting provider of a hacking of my family tree data base. This necessitated a complete reinstallation of the data base at www.greencity.org/TNG. Because of the security breach, I have implemented requirements that users of the site must be registered. Unfortunately, the date base with 82 previously registered family tree researchers was also corrupted (though I can notify them from a backup data set, all will have to re-register). I will be notifying them by e-mail separately, but this post is intended to notify them as well.

Trinity Abigail Burton was born to our daughter Alejandra Contreras and David Burton on Monday, November 24 in Klamath Falls, Klamath Co., Oregon. She arrived in good health a few minutes short of midnight. Alex and Trinity are expected to be released from the hospital today (Wednesday) and, with daddy Bubba will be joining us in Medford for an afternoon Thanksgiving dinner.
